The Nebuta Festival is the biggest festival in Aomori City, the capital of Aomori Prefecture. The festival is so famous that not only locals but also domestic and international tourists come to witness it. The total number of people is over one million every year.
The main attraction of the festival is the “Parade of Nebuta.” Large, colorful human-shaped, illuminated lantern floats are carried along the street.
Each Nebuta float measures approximately 9 meters wide, 7 meters long, and 5 meters high. They weigh approximately four tons, including an accompanying rolling trolley. They are magnificent works of art crafted from wires, paper, and colorful painted images. Illuminated by lighting, they come to life after dark.
The Nebuta floats are transported through the streets by teams of local people who skillfully operate them. For instance, they spin the Nebuta floats at the intersections, so that we can fully enjoy their three-dimensional artistry.
The musical accompaniment is also an essential part of the Nebuta Festival. The sound is so powerful and dynamic that it blends together perfectly with the bold Nebuta floats.
This annual festival takes place from August 2nd to 7th in Aomori City, Japan.
You should definitely experience the festival; I’m sure it would be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life!
