The construction of Nebuta floats takes almost a year, involving delicate processes and a heavy workload.
The extensive process of creating a Nebuta float begins with a painting produced by a Nebuta-Shi, a special artist for the Nebuta floats. He or she plays a critical role in creating a float. The painting is used as a blueprint for the float.
Nebuta floats are very large, requiring spacious areas for their creation. In the middle of May, temporary sheds are built in a park near Aomori station. The sheds, called Nebuta-Goya, are not only used as studios but also as base camps, garages, and exhibition spaces.
In Nebuta-Goya, the basic framework of the floats is assembled using rectangular lumber. After that, the detailed floats’ three-dimensional shapes are created using wires. Until the 1950s, thin strips of bamboo were used to create shapes instead of wires. The use of flexible and durable wire enhances the intricacy and complexity of Nebuta expression.
The installation of light bulbs is also an important part of this process, with the number of light bulbs totaling over one thousand per float. These light bulbs are significant in the Nebuta parade because it’s held at night.
After completing the assembly process, Japanese Hoshogami paper is adhered to wires. The shapes of the Nebuta floats become increasingly complex, especially in these modern times. This process involves a significant amount of labor and time.
Once the Hoshogami paper is applied, the Nebuta floats appear entirely white. Nebuta-shi, the Nebuta float specialist, brushes faces, hands, clothes, and so on using ink.
Coloring also requires a lot of time and effort. In my opinion, the coloring should primarily reflect the personality of each Nebuta-shi. Some people prefer traditional coloring, while others prefer to try new and modern colors.
After finishing the coloring process, the Nebuta float is finally placed on a rolling trolley. The float is fragile due to its wires and paper construction, so this process requires meticulous care.
Have you enjoyed gaining an insight into the process of constructing Nebuta floats? You can witness most of the process at Nebuta-Goya. That means you can enjoy the Nebuta floats even before the festival period. I hope you come to Aomori City and experience the exciting festival someday!
